The domain expired in February 2005 before being reactivated by Daniel Kerr, a developer based in the United Kingdom, who used it as the basis for his own e-commerce software, written in PHP. The first stable version was version 1.1.1, published on Google Code on February 10, 2009.
In September 2014, Daniel Kerr stated that OpenCart is the leading supplier of e-commerce software in China while in August 2015, it was responsible for 6.42% of the global e-commerce volumes recorded by builtwith.com, behind WooCommerce and Magento and before OSCommerce, ZenCart , and Shopify. In February 2017, he said that OpenCart had around 317,000 OpenCart live sites, which, according to Kerr, was much more than Shopify or Magento.
